Some residents of Maitland are getting ready for a recall vote, collecting signatures to remove Councilman Phil Bonus from office. A video showing Bonus stumbling just before he was arrested for a DUI last December has fueled the push for his resignation. The video was released Friday by the State Attorney's Office.
Bonus has resigned from the Chamber of Commerce where he was the president-elect, but he has refused to step down from the Maitland City Council, even at the request of the mayor and other city leaders.
Roger Pickar is looking into the recall because he says Bonus, "hasn't apologized for putting us through this, or damaging Maitland's name." Pickar adds, "It's about him, and he's prolonging it, and hasn't acted contrite to the public."
Bonus has not said anything publicly since Monday night's meeting where the council stripped him of his title as vice mayor. He left a sign on his front door asking that the media respect his privacy.
Maitland Mayor Howard Schieferdecker says he hopes it does not come down to a recall. Instead, he is hoping Bonus does the right thing and resigns.
Schieferdecker told FOX 35, "This is a very unfortunate thing. I am committed to do whatever I can to help them, but he has to resign, so they can heal and get going."
