TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WOFL FOX 35 ORLANDO) -
What was supposed to be a help line for those seeking more information on a fungal meningitis outbreak was instead the number to a phone sex hotline.
WUSF first reported the error after calling the phone number released by Florida Gov. Rick Scott during a news conference on Tuesday. When WUSF posted the telephone number on the station's website, they were notified by a reader that the number was connected to an
adult telephone line.
The correct number is 866-523-7339, but Scott was off by one number.
The Florida Department of Health reported Tuesday that a 70-year old man died in July, before the discovery of the contaminated steroid medication authorities have linked to the infection.
Officials say there are now six total cases in Florida, all in Marion County. More than 100 cases have been reported nationally, with about a dozen deaths.
