DETROIT -- As D'Andre Lane listened to the verdict, his attorney put a hand on his shoulder. The 32-year-old father of Bianca Jones was convicted on charges of felony murder and child abuse.
Lane reported Bianca missing on December 2 of last year and claimed he was carjacked with the child still inside, prompting police and a thousand volunteers to embark on a citywide search, but to no avail. Baby Bianca was never found.
Still the jury convicted Lane after detailed testimony from witnesses, who said he beat the child with a stick for wetting her bed and had a history of abusive punishment of his children for bathroom accidents.
Terry Johnson, attorney for D'Andre Lane, said they were stunned by the verdict and could appeal. Johnson had argued Bianca has never been located. There is no body and a lack of evidence to convict his client.
"Mr. Lane still maintains his innocence in this, and he was surprised, as we were, by the verdict based upon what we feel is a lack of evidence. However, as I said, we do respect the jury's verdict," Johnson said.
Bianca's mother, Banika, has always said she believes her child is still alive. She was not present for the verdict, and she declined to comment at her home.
Lane faces life in prison without parole when he is sentenced in November 16.
