It's beginning to feel like an old habit, a natural right of October here in Detroit. In order for the Tigers to get to where they want to go, they have to go through New York. This year's ALCS marks the third time in the last seven seasons that Detroit will take on the dreaded men in pinstripes in the post season. But unlike 2006 when Jim Leyland loaded his squad onto a bus on the final day of the regular season and went into old Yankee Stadium, for what many thought would be their quick elimination from the post season - this time things are different. Like most successful teams in the playoffs, Detroit used superior starting pitching the last two times it ended New York's season - including last year in Game 5 of the ALDS. This time will be no different. With a one-two punch of Verlander (17-8 lifetime vs. NYY, with a 2.64 ERA) and Fister, backed up by Scherzer and Sanchez - the AL East winners shouldn't be any more than a bump in the road as the Tigers look to return to the World Series for the first time since '06. Sure, they don't have the home field advantage, that can be so important in a seven game Championship series, but the Tigers have proven time and again, that they can go on the road and win the big game in the post season - having done just that in game 5 last year in New York and again this season amid a raucous A's crowd out in Oakland. These Tigers are not only battle tested, but they should have plenty of confidence following this route through the post season - after all they've been here before and have found the way to rise to the occasion and defeat the Evil Empire. And it's that fact alone that makes a trip through New York to get where they're going, all the more sweet.
