DETROIT -- An official says a fire at the Griswold Senior Apartments near downtown Detroit sent a few people to the hospital Monday night.  We're told one of those individuals had suffered burns.

Careless smoking is believed to have sparked the fire on the sixth floor.

"One of my neighbors, he's paralyzed on one side.  It was hard for him to get down the steps, so me and my other neighbor helped him.  And then we come to find out the other one that was in the wheelchair, he was stuck on the exit steps out of his chair," said Theodore.  "He (is) kind of a large guy, so we had to help him," said Theodore.

We're told that the fire was contained to one unit and that the building's sprinkler system caused water damage.

The Red Cross is helping six residents who have been displaced.
