ROCKVILLE, Minn. (KMSP) -

One person is dead and his suspected killer is in the hospital after he was shot by police in the small central Minnesota town of Rockville.

Officers were called to downtown Rockville, Minn. early Sunday morning for reports of a man with an assault rifle. When they arrived, they found 30-year-old Jeffery Schutz shot to death behind his home.

"When we arrived on scene, we found a man in an alley with apparent gun shots wounds and a female was administering CPR at that time," said Stearns County Sheriff John Sanner.

Sanner added that the woman trying to help Schutz was his wife.

Sanner said an argument moved from the Schutz home to a camper in the backyard the alley, and five shell casings were found near the victim's body. From there, a four-hour manhunt began for 28-year-old Marcus Barshaw.

The sheriff said Schutz and Barshaw knew each other, but would not elaborate on their relationship.

Officers from several different departments went door to door and used a reverse 911 system to alert neighbors. Meanwhile, K-9 officers tried to locate Barshaw.

By 8 a.m., a neighbor pointed police toward an apartment complex about a block from where the shooting happened, telling police Barshaw may be hiding the laundry room. As officers moved in, they say Barshaw emerge with the rifle.

"While they are doing that, the individual comes out of the back door of the apartment complex, still armed with the SKS assault rifle," Sanner said. "Officers made verbal commands for him to drop the weapon, he does not. He starts to pull the weapon in the direction of the officers. At that time, at least one officer fired."

Sanner said a deputy who has been with the department for 6 1/2 years shot Barshaw three times.

"All of the officers involved are shaken," Sanner said. "It's not an easy thing to do."

The sheriff believes Barshaw wanted officers to kill him. He was taken to St. Cloud Hospital in critical condition and was moved to Hennepin County Medical Center in Minneapolis on Monday. A deputy is stationed outside of Barshaw's room at HCMC.

The deputy involved in the shooting has been put on standard paid administrative leave.
