A metro Atlanta college is making major changes to its campus security. Life University in Marietta has chosen to eliminate its police department entirely—and some students say the decision to hire a private security firm has them concerned about their safety.
Soon, the police cruisers seen around campus and the officers who drive them will be a thing of the past. Executive Vice President and Provost Dr. Brian McAulay told FOX 5 that given the school's size, having a police force on campus is really not necessary.
The move eliminates 10 full-time positions and four part-time positions. Those officers will be replaced with guards who are not armed, and do not have the power to make an arrest.
Still, school officials say the changers are being made with safety in mind.
"We're blessed in this area, with Marietta police force and Cobb County (who) are very aware of what we're doing, and they can provide support should something happen," said Dr. McAulay. "If we need help, they can come here quickly. We feel comfortable that we're maintaining that level of security and safety that our students and staff need."
However, some students told FOX 5 they remain concerned about what impact the lack of a university police force will have on their student body of 2,500—400 of whom actually live on campus.
