A local radio show is spearheading a campaign to make sure every troop feels the love during the holidays. The Bert Show is hoping you can help them say thank you.
On any given morning you can usually count on the crew at The Bert Show to give you a good laugh. But as Thanksgiving approaches, they're setting all jokes aside to send out a special message across the airwaves.
"So here's what we're really trying to do. We want to make sure there's one day out of the year where every single person in the military gets a touch from home and that's The Bert Show's Big Thank You," said Bert Weiss of The Bert Show.
That Big Thank You is in the form of a handwritten letter.
"This is pen to paper, just sitting down and thanking our troops for their service," said The Bert Show's Jenn Hobby.
Last year, The Bert Show collected more than a half a million letters to be sent to deployed service members. The letters came from schools, businesses, churches, and some letters even came from as far away as Spain.
"To see the little kids writing in crayon and drawing pictures and lot of the servicemen and women actually respond back to some of the letters they received last year," said Kristin Klingshorn.
Klingshorn knows how much the letters mean. Her brother, a U.S. Marine, received one when he was serving in Afghanistan last year.
"Seeing all those letters come in and thumbing through them, and reading the words of gratitude, it was a huge morale booster not only for them but for the families as well," said Klingshorn.
The letters will be sent out to every part of the world, where U.S. service members are serving. It's on paper, but it's meant to be a big hug from home.
"People think it's such a small token but these handwritten letters, they mean the world. And it's such a huge morale booster," said Klingshorn.
