After much debate, the Cobb County School Board voted on Thursday to approve a calendar for the 2013-14 school year. Classes will begin on August 7, with short breaks throughout the year.
There's been debate among parents over whether there should be several weeklong breaks spread throughout the school year. But if that happens, it means an earlier start date in the summertime.
"Families and people that work during summer, it's tough to have an August 1….or a July 31 start date, and I think that was very tough for some people," said Sarah Regitz, a parent.
"I firmly believe that the earlier you start in August, the more it will cost you in utilities," said Alison Bartlett, a board member.
The eventual plan that passed was proposed by Cobb County School Superintendent Michael Hinojosa.
"I don't really care what calendar we have. My kids have been under every kind of calendar conceivable to man, and I think they've survived very well," said Hinojosa.
If new board members are elected in November, the matter could come up again, much to the frustration of parents and some board members. .
"I just think it's a sad state of affair, we're talking about calendar and probably will be. That is one thing I will not miss," said board member Linda Eagle.
Although the start date for next school year was decided to be August 7, any furlough days could still push it back to August 12.
