Grief-stricken family members ran through the police tape surrounding a north Minneapolis home that became the scene of a fatal double-stabbing early on Monday.
Officers were dispatched to the 1200 block of 10th Avenue North, located across the street from Bethune Elementary School, at 4:28 a.m. Inside, responding officers found a woman and a teenaged boy had been slain.
No suspects are in custody, but police say they do not believe the public is in danger.
Family members told FOX 9 News that the woman was a nursing assistant at the VA hospital and often took in family members and raised them as her own children.
"That's my mother, okay?" William Sargbah, the victim's nephew, told FOX 9 News. "So tell me, how do you feel if you lose your mom? That's how I feel."
Sargbah said his aunt Beatrice raised him, describing her as "the mother every child would ever want."
Sargbah was not the only family member she took in. She was described as a pillar of her family -- a woman who came from Liberia to help her family seek a better life.
Many family members flocked to the home in utter anguish after learning the news. Police had to restrain some to keep them from going into the home.
Family members said the boy who was also killed was Beatrice's grandson, but they are stumped about why the two were killed. They say nothing at the home would be worth stealing.
Investigators spent a lot of time focusing on the back door of the home, but no details have been released.
Anyone with information is asked to call the Minneapolis Police Department's tip line at 612-692-TIPS (8477). The case number for this incident is 12-339727.
The identities of the victims and their causes of death will be released by the Hennepin County medical examiner.
