Dionne Miller's `Happenings at Halas' - October 31

CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

Brandon Marshall started his press conference with a moment of silence for last weeks game. "Why you all living in the past?", he jokingly asked. The only reason he can joke like this is obviously because the Bears managed a 4th quarter comeback win. Barely.

On Sunday Marshall said Jay Cutler was the difference on that game winning drive. Cutler is the leagues number one rated passer in the final 15 minutes so that's invaluable to the Bears offense. "He has that clutch gene," Marshall says, "some people believe in it, some people don't but Jay has it."

But the Bears rank dead last on 1st down. Validating Cutler's statement "We see more 2nd and tens than anyone in the league." A by product of slow starts to each of the first 7 games. At the same time, it's only been 7 games. New faces, a new offense, a new co-ordinator...its going to take time for that to come together. They've shown flashes of the predicted explosiveness, but not consistency. Not early. Of the 185 points the Bears have scored this season only 30 have come in the first quarter, and only 3 times have they scored on the opening drive. Cutler has been sacked 11 times in the last 2 games. A combined 9 of them happening before half time. Not to mention the offensive line penalties that have peppered the last couple games. Things that need to be cleaned up.

"We don't have to get exponentially better," Cutler said, "we just have to take one step at a time, each week, each player get a little bit better at a time and by the end of the year we'll be where we want to be." Marshall echoed those thoughts saying the Bears are close to being the explosive offense fans were counting on. " We definitely respect the guys we go up against, but if we continue to work hard only people who can stop us, is us."

The always quotable Mike Tice talked about the slow starts the team has had. He said they've started the game well, and ended it well with the 2 minute drill, its just that middle part. "As Diane (his wife) says, what were you doing the other 58 minutes before that 2 minute drive.

It's that middle part. We've been doing better early and at the end.

It's that middle part we've got to do better, once we do that, maybe we can put a whole game together...two drink minimum by the way." The follow up was can your wife coach. He said, "Yeah she can coach, she tells me to put the seat down after I urinate- yeah she can coach, she can yell too." Wow, a little TMI. But classic Tice.

Marshall did call the 3-5 Titans a "scary team", and it wasn't a halloween reference. Tennessee is literally an overtime miscue away from a 3 game winning streak. They've given up a lot of points (257 to be exact, most in the NFL), but they beat the Lions and Pittsburgh at home in close games and have twice gone to overtime. by a combined 6 points, and twice already they have gone to overtime. Plenty to take seriously as they head into the seasons mid point.

Homecoming...Sort of...

Nashville is Jay Cutler's off season home. He, Earl Bennett and DJ Moore all called the city home when they played for Vanderbilt. Though Moore believe he left the lasting impression because he was the only one of the trio that won a bowl game. Hmm, perhaps we'll have to do some on the street investigating when we arrive.
