Edina police uncover marijuana grow house on emergency call

EDINA, Minn. (KMSP) -

Edina, Minn., holds some of the nicest neighborhoods in the metro, but police got quite a surprise when they responded to a medical emergency and found marijuana growing in the basement of a home near 50th and France.

At that busy intersection, visitors can find everything from upscale stores to trendy restaurants. That's why neighbors and officials never imagined they'd find drugs growing just feet from downtown.

Officers entered the duplex on West 50th Street on Tuesday afternoon after receiving an emergency call for medical help. Once inside, they found the man who lives there -- identified as Paul Schneider -- dead of an apparent suicide.

That wasn't the only thing they found. While searching the home, police found a small grow operation in the basement, complete with heat lamps and about 30 marijuana plants.

Schneider had a history of convictions related to weapons and drugs, but Edina Police chief Jeff Long said he may have simply been depressed. Investigators do not yet know whether the grow operation had anything to do with his decision to take his own life.

"It's tragic when something like this happens -- whether the death is related to the drugs or something else," Long said. "We commonly see drugs and death intertwined. We're seeing it in the big cities all the time. We see it in the suburbs too."

Erica Bennet teaches music at the church next door, and she told FOX 9 News she had no idea the friendly neighbor she sometimes spoke with was growing drugs in his basement.

"It's sad, it's scary and it just shows that we don't know what's going on right next to us," she said.
