WALTON, Ky. -

A city council candidate in Kentucky learned the hard way that every vote counts.

Robert McDonald finished in a dead heat Tuesday with Olivia Ballou for a seat on the Walton City Council.

Each candidate captured 669 votes - but one vote McDonald is sure would have gone his way was never cast.

His wife Katie who works nights at a local hospital didn't make it to the polls because she was sleeping.

"She was just getting a few hours of sleep and then when it came time for Election Day, she was like wake me up at 1 o'clock and I'll go up there and get it done. It was my job to wake her up. I didn't think it was going to come down to that one vote so I chose to let her sleep and get her rest and it came down to that one vote, " McDonald said.

The candidates have the option to ask for a re-canvass or recount to verify the results.

Otherwise, the winner will be determined by the flip of a coin.
