CLERMONT, Fla. (WOFL FOX 35 ORLANDO) -
Built in 1955 to showcase Florida's citrus industry, The Citrus Tower in Clermont is one of Florida's oldest attractions.
"Highway 27 was the main thoroughfare north and south. It was Silver Springs -- where the 'Tarzan' movies were filmed -- The Citrus Tower and Cypress Gardens. Those were the big three attractions," Citrus Tower owner Greg Homan told Fox 35's David Martin.
The tower is 226 feet tall, and it sits on about 226 feet of ground, making the view from the top about 450 feet above sea level. Downtown Orlando can be seen to the east, and Disney to the southeast.
The Citrus Tower "is still pretty busy today even, but it was huge back then," Homan said.
For the holidays, the attraction is turned into a giant Christmas tree and will light up every night in December with a show synchronized to music, he said.
The Citrus Tower, at 141 N. Highway 27, Clermont, costs $6 for adults and $4 for children and is open six days a week. For more information, call 352-394-4061 or go to citrustower.com.
