Just a couple years ago, it was an unknown. These days, Greek yogurt is at the top of shopping lists. Just ask the Barber Sisters.
"If I'm going to choose yogurt, I'm going to choose Greek yogurt over regular yogurt," says Alana Barber
Her sister Elizabeth says, "Greek yogurt is a healthy nutritious snack I tend to indulge in every now and then."
The two young women are neighbors and share everything, but how they eat their Greek yogurt is very different. Elizabeth eats it for breakfast. Alana cooks with it.
Alana says, "I don't tell people, and usually they don't notice. It usually has a sour taste to it. Being plain, it can take on the taste of things you put with it. "
Greek yogurt is known for its extra thick and creamy texture. The Barber sister say there are more choices since they made the switch.
Elizabeth says, "I probably believe it was just a shelf or two and not a whole lot of variety in flavors. I have definitely seen a growth in that respect."
That's because there is a grocery store revolution in the works, and the battle is being waged in the diary aisle. The landscape is changing thanks to the popularity of Greek yogurt.
SweetBay Spokesperson Nicole Lebeau says, "Sales have increased about 45-percent over last year."
That's expected to grow, given the amount of Greek yogurt produced in the United States. The country's largest producer of Greek yogurt is Chobani. The company took over a retired Kraft plant in 2007, and has since mass produced the concrete-thick treat.
"It's just a process where it's strained to make it thicker, another time to remove the liquid, to make it thicker, and more protein per bite," explains registered dietitian Batina Timmons. While Greece gets the glory, the technique is traced to the Mediterranean region.
Those who have problems with lactose might be able to tolerate Greek yogurt; however, those with milk allergies should stay away.
Most yogurts are endorsed by the American Academy of Pediatrics as a milk substitute.
As always, those with milk sensitivity issues should talk with their doctor before introducing any dairy into their diet.
