Boone coach gets win in last 'Battle for the Barrel'
ORLANDO, Fla. (WOFL FOX 35 ORLANDO) -
While the Boone Braves were out of the state playoffs, there was one game remaining on the schedule which arguably carried as much weight and as much emotion as any post-season match up.
In any given year, the "Battle for the Barrel" is a big game for Boone and their cross-town rival, the Edgewater Eagles, but this game was special in that it marked the final one for Braves coach Phil Ziglar, who is retiring after 23 seasons at the school.
Entering into Friday night's game, Edgewater led the series 42-16-2. Could they put another one in the win column?
Boone would hold a 10-6 lead at the beginning of the fourth quarter, but Edgewater would answer, bringing the score to 12-10. Instead of kicking the extra point, Edgewater opted for a 2-point conversion but failed to score. That left the door open for a stunning field goal by Boone with 10 seconds remaining in the game. Boone would win at Edgewater, 13-12. The victory marked their first win at Edgewater since 1992.
Edgewater travels to Evans next week for the first round of state playoffs.
