STILLWATER, Minn. (KMSP) -

For years, Lumberjack Days was one of the most popular festivals in the Twin Cities, and it drew thousands to Stillwater every summer. Now, the former promoter is facing criminal charges claiming he swindled vendors out of thousands of dollars.

Prosecutors say the investigation took over a year and involved combing through boxes and boxes of documents. In the end, they accused David Eckberg of paying himself instead of the vendors.

The Washington County Attorney told FOX 9 News Eckberg was charged with 10 felonies because he transferred more than $40,000 from Lumberjack Days to his personal accounts -- all while telling beer suppliers and a music production company he didn't have the money to pay them.

A group of Stillwater High School hockey players also said they never got the $10,000 they were promised for setting up and tearing down the stage in sweltering heat -- and their coach doesn't believe they'll ever see a dime.

"They worked heard in hot conditions -- 95 to 100-degree heat," said Stillwater Hockey Coach Phil Housley. "I think it was coming with all that's gone on with Lumberjack Days. It took a long time to get to this point but justice was served."

Eckberg's attorney said his client is relieved the investigation is over, and is looking forward to explaining what went wrong in court. Eckberg will get that chance when he makes his first court appearance in January.
