PHILADELPHIA -

More than 300 Philadelphia hostess employees walked off the job Sunday to join picketers brought in from Maine after deciding to go on strike.

The Local 6 Baker's Union members were given a pep talk outside the Hostess plant in Northeast Philadelphia Sunday afternoon.

Workers say they are fighting a contract that would slash healthcare coverage and other benefits along with a pay cut by eight percent.

The company, known for Twinkies, Zingers and other popular snacks, filed for bankruptcy earlier this year.

In a statement issued Friday, Hostess said the widespread strike would cause its brands to liquidate if they're unable to make or deliver their products.

"If that's the case, the company will move promptly to lay off most of its 18,300-member workforce and focus on selling its assets to the highest bidders," the statement read.

In the statement, the company urged its employees to remain on the job to "rebuild the company."

Barry Fields, president of Local 6, tells FOX 29's Omari Fleming that members want good healthcare and pensions.
