Authorities in Henry County have identified the police officer killed after being struck by a hit-and-run driver. A roadside assistance worker was also injured during the Monday incident.
The incident happened around 6:40 p.m. as Henry County Police Officer Elgin L. Daniel was assisting Gordon Jarrett, whose Mustang had run out of gas. Jarrett said that the officer and a roadside assistance worker were both standing on the side of North Henry Boulevard near the Star Lite Skate Center when they were struck.
Jarrett said the vehicle slowed down after striking the men and then sped off.
Police say both victims were rushed to Atlanta Medical Center, where Daniel later died. The roadside assistance worker, John Cook, 58, is in stable condition with non-life threatening injuries.
Henry County police say Daniel, 53, was with the department for two years, and was a retired police lieutenant with 26 years of service with the DeKalb County Police Department.
Jarrett was not injured.
Authorities said the driver was possibly in a 1997 - 2007 Ford F-250 truck and may have front end damage and it may have a broken driver's side mirror. The vehicle was headed towards Rockdale County on Hwy 138, police said.
Police are reviewing surveillance footage from along the corridor on Henry Boulevard in hopes of catching an image of the vehicle. Anyone with information is urged to contact the Henry County Police Department.
