'Shemale' athlete arrested on rape charge

Posted: Updated:

An award-winning athlete in India has been charged in the rape of a woman who was a former roommate, after medical tests showed that the athlete was a man posing as a woman.

Pinki Pramanik, a retired runner who took medals at the Asian Games and Commonwealth Games of 2006, was arrested in June and forced to undergo a gender test.  The 26-year-old athlete was charged after a medical board determined that she was actually a male pseudo-hermaphrodite -- genetically a man, with some female physical characteristics.

The case has been at the center of much controversy in India, with some groups claiming Pramanik's privacy had been violated based purely on allegations.

Pramanik also faces a charge of forgery.
