Flag flown upside down to protest election outcome

PALM BAY, Fla. (WOFL FOX 35 News) -

An American flag flying upside down, historically, is a signal of distress.  A  Palm Bay family did just that, hanging a flag upside down to signal that they believe the outcome of the presidential election has put the country in distress.

Shirley Moore and her husband Thomas, a disabled war veteran, find the sight of the Star Spangled Banner flying upside down right across from their house upsetting.

"To do something like that was, un-American," said Shirley. "That does not present us as a United States of America, to have our flag upside down, and it hurt my feelings, because my husband's a veteran."

The flag has been upside down since Saturday and has stayed that way through Veteran's Day, something Moore says is especially disrespectful.

"I feel that a lot of people, grandparents, great grandparents all fought for this country and that they deserved at least one day of recognition, without there having to be something turned upside down."

But the family that lives in the home said they don't mean any disrespect, especially to veterans, and said the upside down flag is simply an expression of their disappointment about  the election.  They even posted a sign on their door citing Title 36, Chapter 10, of the flag code, explaining the meaning of the flipped flag.
