Single women choose Barack Obama

Posted: Updated:

What's the difference between a married and unmarried women?

Sounds like a set-up line for a Jerry Seinfeld joke, but it's no joke that single females handed Barack Obama a huge portion of his election victory while basically ignoring the other guy.  The president clobbered Gov. Romney with this sub-group by a whopping 36%.

The Romney camp knew they had a gender challenge which is why they plunked spouse Ann Romney center stage at the GOP convention.

Remember her shouting out, "Women," as she tried to gin up support for her hubby.  She tried real hard.

How'd that work out?

Not so hot.

Unmarried females compose 25% of all voters in this country and 67% of them voted for Mr. Obama but not for the reason you think.

The popular wisdom, now being debunked by the exit polls, suggested that all the conversative GOP chatter about rape, God, and reproductive rights drove these females into the D column.

It was a factor but not predominant.  More importantly these voters felt the president deserved credit for bringing the country through the recession and  they concluded that rich-guy Romney didn't understand their lives.  That's the same failure to connect stuff that dogged Mr. Romney from the opening bell with other segments of the voting public

Mr. Romney did secure the married female vote defeating the incumbent by seven points with a respectable 53% of that vote.

So to repeat, what's the difference?

It's obvious researchers suggest.  Married women are more likely to have stable lives than single women, especially in cases of divorce, separation and the death of a spouse.  Many struggle economically which is why they liked the incumbent's health care agenda and his pro-equal pay stance in the workplace.  Maybe you caught it; the R's were not exactly there.

But don't kid yourself they also watched the attempts to slash funding for Planned Parenthood and while the research did not nail this, it's a good bet they didn't want Big Bird shot because he is a good baby sitter.

For some conservative R's, instead of trying to figure out how to appeal to this 55 million segment of the voting population, some have demeaned the singles as being less than the rest.

Which is exactly why the singles didn't listen to Mrs. Romney's pitch.
