Volusia animal shelter rescues pets displaced by Sandy

Posted: Updated:

The Arni Foundation sent several members to New York and North Carolina to rescue 35 cats and dogs that were displaced or crowded out by Hurricane Sandy.  Arni Founder Nikki Linn went there to help.

"I think the shelters there had a trickle down effect. The shelters there were full with people's animals," said Linn. "They were housing animals, until they find their owners, so those shelters are absolutely packed with strays and other animals."

Two kittens were found along the way, too cute to turn away.

"Liberty and Quincy were named for the streets they were found on," Linn said.  "A guy said, 'Please take them, they're under my house!'  So, we took them."

Most of the animals appear to be in good health.  One puppy is missing an eye, and some are missing tails.  The Arni Foundation will care for the animals, spay and neuter them, then they will be ready for new families.

The shelter has already had locals stopping by to say hello to these new additions.  If you'd like to check out the animals, or make a donation to help care for them, you can go to the Arni Foundation website.
