Officials monitoring large sinkhole in Windermere

WINDERMERE, Fla. (WOFL FOX 35 ORLANDO) -

Authorities are keeping a close eye on a large sinkhole which has developed at a private residence in Windermere.  The massive hole, over 50 feet wide and 8 feet deep, opened up in the front yard of Paul Padfield's home near the intersection of Wax Berry Court and Park Avenue.

Town Supervisor Robert Smith said that engineers and a geologist from Orlando-based Tierra Geological Company believe the sinkhole is not migrating; however, it will continue to be surveyed with sonar-radar in order to determine if it has stabilized, so a filling process can begin.

Geologist still need to check the foundation directly underneath the Padfield's home, to ensure there is no structural damage as a result of the sinkhole.

Padfield says his irrigation system may be damaged, along with his septic tank.  He is estimating costs upwards of $20,000 to $30,000.
