ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) - Gov. Andrew Cuomo is set to announce a new program using federally paid contractors to do basic, critical work so victims of Superstorm Sandy can stay in, or return to, their damaged homes during major repairs.
The Federal Emergency Management Agency will assign contractors who will be reimbursed by FEMA. New Yorkers need to contact their city or county government to take part in the Emergency Assistance program.
Cuomo asked for the program so New Yorkers can safely stay in their homes and avoid living in temporary shelters while work is being done.
The immediate repairs include fixing electric meters and exterior damage, replacing doors, putting tarps on roofs, and other minor structural and electric work.
The program to be announced Wednesday is available in counties with federal disaster declarations.
