Baby reveal parties: The icing on the cake

TAMPA (FOX 13) -

Couples are getting creative about announcing that they're expecting.

"Some people try for so long to get pregnant and they're just so thrilled to be having the baby and they want to share that excitement with their friends and family," explained Melanie Judge, owner and master decorator at Ph.D.-serts & Cakes.

Once the couple finds out they're having a baby, the next big question is whether it's a boy or girl. Melanie often knows the answer even before the parents.

"If it's a girl, the cake is going to be pink, if it's a boy, the cake will be blue," she said.

Melanie gets the ultrasound results in a sealed envelope with a note from the doctor. That determines the design of her masterpiece.

"I put the color in the cake, ice it, decorate it in a gender neutral setting or tone," Melanie explained, "So when they get the cake they have no idea what the gender will be on the inside."

Once the cake is done, it's time for the party where they make the big reveal.

"They invite their friends over, they all gather around and when they slice into the cake is when they first see the color."

We went to one of those "baby reveals" to see what all the hype was about.

Katherine Mattera, a 24-year-old expectant mother, was staring at the cake, "It looks beautiful on the outside, but I really just want to cut it open, I just want to smash it."

Katherine knew exactly what she wanted, "I was hoping for a healthy baby girl."

However, everyone in the room was voting against her.

"Boy is dominating right now," she said, "I'm not happy, I don't like it at all. Everyone should be 'Team Pink.'"

Before finding out whether her dreams of a baby girl would come true, the partygoers played a trivia game to see if some of the old wives' tales would tip off the sex of the baby. Then it was finally the moment everyone had been waiting for: Time to cut the cake!

"Oh my God, Ma, this cake isn't going. Oh my God it's not coming out," said Katherine, who sounded like she was in labor as she tried to cut the cake.

Soon the entire room burst into cheers as she was overwhelmed with tears.

"It's pink. It's pink," she said, as she declared the sex of the baby to her friends and family.

"It's a girl! I knew it was a girl. I'm freakin out," she told her sister, who was watching via Skype.

"I'm having a girl. Yay!" she cheered as she made her plans for the next day, "I'm gonna go shopping, I'm going shopping."

For Katherine, having a baby girl is truly icing on the cake.
