Some bold burglars stole a badge and guns from a Volusia County juvenile detention officer. The thieves broke into a home on Hemingway Drive in Deltona and stole the officer's badge, two hand guns and a shot gun. It happened in the middle of the day on Wednesday.
The juvenile justice officer called 911, saying he left his home around 3 p.m. When he came home at 7, he said he found the glass on his front door smashed, the door pushed open, and guns and money stolen.
Tom read and his son both live in this neighborhood, he said they will be keeping their eyes open from now on.
"He's been here 8 years. I've live there for 17 years. I've never had no problems."
The sheriff's office notified the Department of Homeland Security, which is normal procedure when a law enforcement officer's weapon is stolen. There is no word on whether the thieves left behind any fingerprints or other incriminating evidence.
Deputies interviewed several neighbors, and so far, there are no leads. I you have any information, call the Volusia County Sheriff's Office.
