`Silver Linings Playbook` and `Anna Karenina` already gaining Oscar buzz: Zwecker

CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

FOX entertainment aficionado Bill Zwecker previews films opening this weekend, some of which have already gained Oscar buzz – all before we reach Thanksgiving weekend!

A holiday blockbuster for sure, the final "Twilight" film "Breaking Dawn Part 2" is sure to be one of the biggest films of the year. While I still like the original "Twilight" film the best, I must say this second half of the "Breaking Dawn" finale is a solid way to wrap up this hugely-popular franchise.

Along with an amazing twist and big surprise near the end of the movie, this film is perhaps the most romantic of the five "Twilight" films. Bella and Edward's great love comes to full fruition as a married couple, with Bella turned vampire and both parenting their daughter, Renesmee.

For "Twilight" fans, this final film is certainly a must-see.

In "Anna Karenina," the third collaboration between Keira Knightley and director Joe Wright, Leo Tolstoy's great novel of the tragic consequences of forbidden love is again brought to the big screen in a truly sumptuous, visually-stunning film.

Knightley is well-cast as the ill-fated Anna, and big kudos must also go to Jude Law as her husband Aleksei, trapped in a loveless marriage. The film is set in the aristocratic world of late nineteenth century Tsarist Russia.

While this is a lushly-made epic, I was disappointed with Aaron Johnson as Anna Karenina's lover Count Vronsky. He and Knightley really didn't deliver the kind of intense passion that is a key element of this tale of star-crossed lovers.

That said, I do recommend "Anna Karenina" to those who love big, sweeping, costume dramas.

Finally, we come to one of my favorite films of the year.

"Silver Linings Playbook" stars Bradley Cooper in an Oscar-worthy performance as Pat Solatano, a Philadelphia high school teacher who is thrown in a state institution after catching his wife cheating - he almost beat her lover to death.

This is a story about a basically good, if troubled, guy who is convinced he can rebuild his life -and win back his wife - though everyone else knows she's moved on. So should he.

Robert Deniro and Jacki Weaver are superb as Cooper's parents. Jennifer Lawrence is perfect as the emotionally-damaged young widow who comes into the life of Pat Solatano in a very unusual way.

While there's some incredibly-intense drama here, "Silver Linings Playbook" is also frequently hilarious - mostly due to the Solatano family and friends' total obsession with the Philadelphia Eagles.

Trust me - you will be hearing a lot about this terrific little movie come Academy Awards time.
