SRP workers return from restoring power on east coast

Posted: Updated:

Sixty SRP workers are finally home after spending weeks on Long Island restoring power to neighborhoods devastated by Superstorm Sandy.

The crews made it home just in time for thanksgiving. Families hugged and kissed, finally reunited.

Sixty SRP workers sacrificed two weeks to go back east and work round the clock in areas devastated by Sandy. They're heroes to the thousands of families left without power.

"The devastation was just amazing," says Guy Trump, SRP. "It just was great to be able to help them out and try to be some bit of a bright spot for them."

Some families on Long Island were without power for 16 days before crews reached them.

"They offered us food, money everything," says Carl Johnson.

In the 35 years Carl Johnson has been working for SRP, he's never seen anything like it.

"Homes destroyed and trash brought out of the bottom of the basements and put all over the street."

These guys are just thankful they were able to do their part. Not only did they restore power, they restored faith for people in need.

"They were grateful very grateful," says Andy Smith, SRP.

"People come together they take care of one another," says Trump.

"They were very good in making sure we had room to do our work and they stayed out of the way," says Johnson.

"I have three kids and a wife that will be happy I'm home," says Smith.

They were thanked for a job well done.
