Assistant football coach arrested

VIERA, Fla. (WOFL FOX 35 ORLANDO) -

A 32-year-old volunteer high school coach spent the past year coaching the Viera High School Football team -- and the last few weeks trying to solicit sex with an underage female student, investigators say.

According to case documents by the Brevard County Sheriff's Office,  Kevin Verpaele "knowingly used a cell phone to Gmail the girl." Investigators describe the conversations as, "sexually explicit... consisting of sexual acts he wanted to perform on the victim."

"We had some conversation with him posing as her to get him away from his office in a place we thought would be safe to come up and have contact with him," said Lt. Todd Goodyear with the Brevard County Sheriff's Office.

A parent of another student caught wind of what was going on and notified the school.      School spokesperson Michelle Irwin says, "Any parent is not going to want an older person --  a married man -- approaching  their child, and I am that way too."

The fact Verpaele is married with children makes the situation more disturbing to some parents we spoke to. Also concerning, was the fact that he is a respected and revered coach on campus. Those who know him, point to his history as a football star, both in high school and at the University of South Florida.

"From what I was told, he was very upset over what he'd done," said Goodyear.

School officials said background checks were conducted and Verpaele's reputation was spotless. Brevard County investigators said he had no prior record.

Verpaele was a volunteer coach who was not on the district's payroll but who received a stipend. Security clearance has been revoked, according to Irwin.
