Hundreds line up for Thanksgiving food boxes

PHOENIX -

Thanksgiving is just days away, and many people are heading to the grocery store shopping for a turkey.

However, others who aren't as fortunate are heading to food banks for a helping hand.

Hundreds of people lined up outside St. Mary's Food Bank on Thomas and 31st Ave and waited for a box of food Monday morning.

"It's definitely a blessing, I appreciate every bit of it," says Linda McDaniel.

Linda McDaniel does not know what she would do if she didn't get a box of food.

"I just wouldn't be able to feed my family."

Many of us have no idea what it is like to be hungry for days, but it's a reality for thousands here in the valley.

"Imagine living with the stress of not only being hungry but not knowing where your next meal is going to come from," says Beverly Demore, St. Mary's Food Bank.

Every year, St. Mary's has a turkey drive. Grocery stores and companies around the valley pitch in donating turkeys.

A family of four can feed themselves for a couple of days.

"I think it's great 'cause there are a lot of people that don't have food," says Dee Vaughn, who picked up a food box. She will share it with her neighbors.

Around the corner, people are donating turkeys. And it's not just turkey -- people are dropping off everything they would like to see on their own thanksgiving table.

St. Mary's is hoping to collect 7,000 turkeys. With help from people like the Shanks, they will make it.

"It's a good thing to do this time of year. There's a lot of people that don't have what we have," says Darrell Shank.

The food bank could use your help. The turkey drive will go right through Christmas, and the demand for food is great.
