SOUTHFIELD, Mich. (WJBK) -- It might be time to get out that nutcracker and break open those walnuts.  It turns out something in them may protect your heart.

Just a handful of walnuts will give you a full day's supply of ALA.  That's the omega-3 fatty acid alpha-Linolenic acid.

In a study in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, researchers looked at more than a couple dozen studies involving over 200,000 patients.  They found the higher the ALA intake, the lower the risk of cardiovascular disease, specifically coronary heart disease.

Usually you hear about omega-3 fatty acids coming from fish, but plant-based ALA is starting to get a lot of attention, too, linked to lowering cholesterol levels and decreasing inflammation.

We should point out this study was paid for by the California Walnut Commission.
