MINNEAPOLIS (KMSP) -
On the eve of one of the busiest times for holiday travel, the Transportation Security Administration is reminding passengers of some security changes and common traveler mistakes.
TSA Federal Security Director Robert Ball says if you are traveling, it's important to make sure you are giving yourself enough time to pack well and get as much in your checked baggage as possible. This helps reduce time at the check point.
There are several safety rules than can lead to security stalls. The rule about liquids in luggage is still in effect, so anything that can be poured, pumped or sprayed should be in a 3-oz. bottle inside a plastic bag in luggage, not a carry-on.
NEW AIRPORT SECURITY RULES
Frequent fliers will still need to go through security checks, but it is modified and faster. Children under 12 years old and seniors over 75 years old can keep their shoes on. Part of the goal is to also reduce the number of pat-downs.
OBVIOUS TIPS
- Leave a little extra time to prepare for the holiday rush. Experts recommend preparing to be at the airport two hours before your flight.
- One more thing: leave your guns at home.
The TSA confiscates approximately three weapons each day from passengers who in most cases say they simply forgot they were in their luggage.

- Hunting knives
- Throwing starts
- Nunchucks
- Grenades
- Cattle prods
- Pepper spray
