Jill Kelley's sister, friend come to her defense

TAMPA (FOX 13) -

Jill Kelley is the Tampa mother of three who unknowingly exposed the affair of David Petraeus. From there, her life became a source of intrigue, rumors and gossip. This is a look at Kelley's life through the eyes of two of her closest friends.

"My sister Jill and I aren't just twins. We are best friends, literally inseparable," said Natalie Kwaham.

Kwaham says she and her twin sister cook together, play piano, chess and tennis. In her darkest hour, she says Jill Kelley was there.

"She held the light for me. She and Dr. Kelley took me in with my son when we needed refuge and protection," Kwaham said.

Now Kelley seeks solace from the frenzy of a scandal. Don Phillips says his friend Jill does not understand why the media focus seems to be on her, not the woman actually involved in the Petraeus affair.

"You can't help why it would be sensational. Jill's a very beautiful woman, a vivacious woman and she has a twin. And you have the CIA director. And I said, ‘please Jill, you don't think you are news, but you are news'," Don Phillips said.

Phillips describes the Kelley family as philanthropic. Scott is a cancer surgeon recruited to come to the area. Jill is a networker who uses connections to organize fundraisers.

"Does that make them wrong? Does that make them social climbers? I think that is a horrible, horrible thing to say about members of people in my community," Phillips said.

Yet the community has seen everything about the Kelleys go public, even mortgage debt.

Phillips points out the large number of homeowners in Florida who are underwater, and says the Kelleys are not the only people to default as part of a strategy.

"You can't get to modification unless there is some sort of default. I think there's been much to do about something that a whole lot of us in this city and this state have had to suffer through," Phillips said.

Phillips views Kelley's police request last week for diplomatic protection as survival mode.

"She's absolutely terrified. There's somebody trying to get in her house on a repeated basis and her very, very pleasant husband, this good doctor sworn by the Hippocratic oath not to harm anyone, is saying ‘please don't come in to my house, please stop'," Phillips said.

One person sure to be welcome is her sister.

"Jill has loved and supported me through the years and I plan to love and support her unconditionally," Kwaham said.
