CTA budget includes hefty fare hike for riders in 2013

CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

It has been three years since the CTA has raised fares, but that is about to change. Next year, prices are going up as much as 74%.

More than a million and a half rides are given on an average weekday on the CTA's buses and trains. In just a few months, those rides will cost noticeably more for customers who purchase multi-day passes.

Here's the breakdown:

A one day pass that costs $5.75 right now, will nearly double to $10.

A three day pass will increase from $14 to $20.

A one week pass goes up from $23 to $28.

And a 30 day pass, will change by $14 dollars, to 100 bucks.

"I usually get a monthly pass," says Amanda Abraham. "It will affect me greatly because we are dependent on every day, paying a certain price."

"Sometimes I only have enough to get on the bus to get to work," says CTA traveler, Ashley. "You know how it is at the end of the week."

The hikes are a part of Chicago Transit Authority President Forrest Claypool's proposed $1.4 billion budget for 2013. In a news conference Tuesday, Claypool said the CTA is facing a $165 million shortfall and that the increases would generate $56 million a year.

"This will put us on a solid fiscal path for many years," Claypool explains. "Our passes were the most generous in country and hadn't changed for many years. All we're doing really with this change is bringing our passes to the national average."

The good news is that CTA fares for single rides will not increase, remaining at $2 on buses and $2.25 on trains.

There is one exception though on the blue line, for passengers leaving O'Hare. Those passengers will be $5, not the standard $2.25. The exception is for those who have a monthly pass, hold a Chicago card, or have reduced fare rides.

These new fares are expected to take effect on January 14th, 2013. There will be a budget meeting held on December 10th at 6 p.m. who want to voice their opinions.
