Accused burglar has his own bike stolen, hails cab to flee with goods
ORLANDO, Fla. (WOFL FOX 35 ORLANDO) -
Call it a case of "what goes around, comes around," as an accused burglar has his own bike stolen. With no transportation, the suspect hailed a cab and police say he started piling stolen goods into the taxi while neighbors saw the whole thing unfold.
"It doesn't sound like something in this neighborhood," said Jason Lambert who lives nearby. "It's a pretty quiet neighborhood."
Michael Hewitt, 35, is charged with burglary and grand theft after investigators say he left a home on E. Gore Street in disarray. The alleged thief took money, laptops and other electronics but had to call a taxi, because someone stole his bike.
When the homeowner returned to find his house had been broken into, he decided to drive around the neighborhood. A short while later, he said he spotted Hewitt getting into the taxi and called 911. Police arrested Hewitt and said all the stolen property was recovered. Neighbors were stunned.
"It kind of bothers me, because I'm not here all the time," said Pam Hancock. "I'm working, so it makes me kind of think about it."
