Gunslingers bring wild west back to life in Brooksville

BROOKSVILLE (FOX 13) -

You can posse up and load your weapons.

"It's the most fun you're going to have with guns and clothes on," said Charles Bebout.

A gang of gunslingers travels to the wild, wild west every month in Hernando County.

"It's always something you wanted to play when you were a kid. You wanted to play cowboys," said Fred Pescodd.

FOX 13 visited a particular shootout that was something special. It's called Vengeance Trail and it is the group's end-of-the-year match.

"And it's a real yahoo," continued Bebout.

In this gunfight, the Hernando County Regulators saddle up in cowboy gear.

"It's costly. It's not cheap, but it's just nice to play like a kid. Even the 85-year-olds dress up like kids," Pescodd said.

Everything is authentic 1800s, from the guns to the clothes.

"Short-sleeve shirts weren't invented back then. If you want to have a short-sleeve shirt, you have to roll it up or cut them up," said Jim Brady.

Events like these were started by the Single Action Shooting Society in California. It began about 15 years ago. There are chapters all across Florida.

At 40 members strong, the Hernando County group attracts gunslingers from the entire state.
