Where does Disney store all those Christmas decorations?

Posted: Updated:
Miles of garland, glitter, lights and ribbons transform Walt Disney World into a winter wonderland like no other, but just like many of us, Disney's got a storage room just for the decorations and displays.

For so many of us here in central Florida, Christmas at Walt Disney World has become a part of our yearly holiday traditions --  whether it be a parade, a meal, a show or whatever other surprises the "pixie dust" conjures up.  No one will deny that Disney does it big this time of year!

"This is where all the decor is kept," says Lisa Borotkanics as she guides us through an 84,000 square-foot warehouse.

Borotkanics manages the storage of the decorations and describes what appears to be a "well-oiled machine."

"The first tree you're going to see is the Magic Kingdom tree. This is a portion of the tree. There are 5 more pieces that go to this."

Borotkanics has a position that is kind of a "left brain, right brain" job.  It's a combination of creativity and numbers, yielding staggering results.   For example, 10,000 square feet of the warehouse is dedicated to nothing but the 1,300 decorated trees you'll find on property.

"These trees are 15 feet to 70 feet, and they stay decorated and assembled." Labeled and organized too.   "These are our large icon tree ornaments. What they actually are, are street light globes," she explains.

Beyond the trees, the garland gets classified as well.  "When we design decor, we start with a basic base of garland, wreaths, and trees. So if we want it to be wintry, we'll pull in wintry flowers.  If we want it to be wilderness, we'll pull in some green picks, pine sprays, and pinecones, and put that in."

As you might have guessed, Disney movies play a big part in the creations that will eventually wind up filling 150 semi-trailer truckloads.

"To my right, is the wreath that we have at the Contemporary Resort, on the 4th floor balcony. It's 25 feet in diameter, with 18 foot elliptical ears that make the silhouette of Mickey Mouse."

Ah, yes.  The one who started it all!  The one responsible for a year-round operation at Walt Disney World called Holiday Services.  After all, while you might have an apartment or house to decorate, Disney has a vacation kingdom with 27 resorts, 4 theme parks, 3 cruise ships, and an island.
