BRADLEY, Ill. (Sun-Times Media Wire) -
The son of former Governor George Ryan was cited for drunken driving early Thursday after falling asleep at wheel in a fast food restaurant parking lot.
Police found George H. Ryan Jr. about midnight asleep at the wheel of a running gray pickup truck parked across several parking spaces in the White Castle Restaurant in the 1500 block of State Route 50 in Bradley, according to Bradley police. There was no indication the vehicle was involved in a crash.
It took an officer several attempts to wake Ryan, who told police he was alright, police said. The officer smelled alcohol on Ryan's breath and noticed his speech was slurred and his eyes were bloodshot.
The officer made Ryan exit the vehicle and attempt several field sobriety tests, which he failed, police said.
Ryan, of the 6200 block of Fern Street in St. Anne, was taken to the Bradley Police Department, where he refused to answer questions or submit to chemical testing, police said. He was cited for driving under the influence of alcohol on private property and booked into the Jerome Combs Detention Center in Kankakee, where he posted bond that morning.
