Police: Toddler run over by SUV in Phoenix

PHOENIX -

A 3-year-old is recovering in a hospital after being run over by an SUV on Sunday.

Neighbors expressed concern when they found out a 3-year-old boy who lives across the street was almost run over by his brother.

"It was probably within inches, it could have been death," said Lt. Emilien Safon, with Phoenix Police Department.

Safon says a mom and her four kids were hanging Christmas lights outside. She went to move her Envoy SUV out of the way when her 10-year-old hopped into the driver's seat.

"Mom was standing in the open doorway and the 10-year-old was asking questions, [like] how cars operate, at some point the car starts going backward," said Safon.

Police say when the vehicle went into reverse, it actually knocked the boy's mom to the ground. Luckily she was able to put her hand on the brake and prevent it from going further.

"She came running in holding the little boy screaming, 'Please help me, call 911'," said neighbor Jim Skousen.

Skousen says the 3-year-old had obvious injuries but was alert; the child's mom and siblings were visibly shaken.

"There were two other kids with her when she came in the house and they were crying and upset, just a tragic situation," said Skousen.

Investigators confirm the 3-year-old had abrasions to his midsection and are working to determine if he was pinned under the tire or if it actually ran over him.

Police say it does not appear the 3-year-old's injuries are life threatening.
