PATH and LIRR service resumes - FOX 35 News Orlando

PATH power problem on Monday

MYFOXNY.COM -

PATH service between Newark and the World Trade Center was suspended for 90 minutes, just hours after it was restored for the first time since Sandy devastated the transit system.

Train service was suspended at approximately 8:30 a.m. due to power problems. Service was restored about 10 a.m.

Service run much more smoothly Monday night.

PATH continued to operate between Newark and 33rd Street.

Nearly a month after massive flooding from Hurricane Sandy caused service cancellations, PATH service from New Jersey into Lower Manhattan along the World Trade Center line resumed at 5:00 a.m. but it was short lived.

Just as the city gears up for a slew of holiday season gridlock alert days, train service on the PATH and Long Island Railroad were restored, making stops they hadn't made since Sandy hit the area.

Between the millions of gallons of water that flooded the tracks to damaged equipment at every turn, restoring the World Trade Center line marked a major milestone in the recovery from Superstorm Sandy.

But in one case, like the Hoboken PATH, the damage was so extensive -- it will be several more weeks before service resumes.

The Queens Midtown Tunnel is expecting normal traffic again and the LIRR is running again through hard hit Long Beach -- but on a weekend schedule.

Lastly, a new ferry has begun running from Staten Island to Manhattan by way of the New York Water Taxi -- progress in the wake of disaster.

But while some areas of town will be easier to navigate, others will not be.

"Wednesday is not only a matinee day during the holiday season, it's tree lighting day (at Rockefeller Center) – and not only is it tree lighting day but Justin Bieber is going to be at Madison Square Garden," said "Gridlock" Sam Schwartz.

"All of West Midtown will be a sea of cars and people – not a place to drive," added Schwartz.

So it will be a tough couple of days on the roads. As far as the PATH goes, from 5:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. is when the trains will be running, not including the Hoboken line.

One complaint from commuters: they wish the PATH was running past 10:00 p.m.
