A group of state lawmakers opposes an effort to remove Victor Hill as Clayton County's next sheriff. Members of the Clayton Legislative Delegation spoke out at the state capitol Monday.
Hill's status as sheriff-elect of Clayton County remains complicated as January approaches, and late Monday, he got a show of support. Five state lawmakers discussed their opposition to a step that could lead to Hill's removal from office, at least temporarily.
The Clayton County sheriff-elect is supposed to take office for the New Year, but he faces a racketeering and theft indictment.
His state law enforcement certification has been suspended, and the Georgia Sheriff's Association wants Hill suspended once he is sworn in until the criminal case is resolved. State Sen. Gail Davenport said that since the courts have not ruled on Hill's case, the delegation wants to make sure he has the right to prove his innocence.
Earlier, the Georgia Sheriff's Association president said Governor Nathan Deal should appoint a retired Clayton County sheriff until Victor Hill's case is over.
