CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

CAUGHT IN THE CROSSFIRE: A 15-year-old girl was killed Monday night in a shooting in the Southwest Side Chicago Lawn neighborhood, police said.

Porche Foster's mother told FOX 32 News that her daughter was not supposed to be in the backyard where she was shot - she was supposed to be at a sleepover with friends at another location Monday night.

But Foster and her friends were talking to a couple boys at 69th and Campbell around 9:15. After a car drove by, police said the gunman came out from an alley and opened fire. They took off running, and a bullet struck Foster in the back.

According to the witnesses, the gunman was running with the gun as he was opening fire shooting at the victims. Porshe Foster, of the 7800 block of South Marshfield Avenue in the Auburn Gresham neighborhood, was the only one shot. She ran inside the stairwell looking to help but she was shot in the back.

Taniesha Dukes says was with her best friend when it happened.

"We was right here talking to friends when a car came out of nowhere starting shooting," Dukes explains. "I got in house but she was laying on the floor."

"She wasn't able to say anything, you know. She wasn't able to say anything," witness Barbara Clay said, describing how she tried to help the girl. "I don't think that she knew that she was shot at first. I guess the way the bullet went in, it took her oxygen supply."

While Foster did not have a criminal record or gang affiliation, the two people she was standing next to at the time of the shooting are both connected to a gang, according to authorities.

Foster was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, but did not survive her injuries. She was pronounced dead less than an hour later, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office.

"He may do it again, I don't know," Bonita Foster said. "All you are doing is ripping people's lives out, for what? For what purpose? I don't understand that."

Bonita Foster is a single mom who works at night. Her 15-year-old daughter was staying with a friend because it is easier for her to get to school from there.

Foster's mother said her daughter was the youngest of six, and no trouble at all. She had dreams of becoming an architect one day. She was working toward a career in that field at ACE Tech, a Chicago charter school, and participated in after school sports and activities.

A makeshift memorial had already begun at the location where Foster was killed Tuesday afternoon, with a single teddy bear with messages of condolences propped up against a fence. Later Tuesday, mourners brought posters filled with written farewells in honor of the sophomore.

Area South detectives continue to investigate the fatal shooting. No one was in custody as of Tuesday afternoon.
