A fake plane crash caused quite a scare Friday morning on the city's South Side.
Ambulances, fire trucks, and the fuselage of a small airplane were in the middle of Martin Luther King Drive Friday morning, causing many people, including some media outlets to believe it was the real thing.
But it was all part of a disaster scene NBC was filming for an upcoming episode of one of its TV programs.
Residents of the neighborhood were notified of the filming by sheets of paper posted on telephone signs and streetlight poles.
One man said he was having his morning coffee when he heard the report of a plane crash near his home.
"They were reporting a plane crash out in back of our house. And I couldn't believe they didn't know that there was a TV show shooting today," the man said.
He says he found out about the filming through the signs posted in his neighborhood.
Larry Langford, a spokesman for the Chicago Fire Department, said nearby residents had been informed of the filming. Langford said moving forward, they would do things differently and put out a media alert notifying radio and TV stations and newspapers directly.
