AUSTRALIA -

New standard tobacco packaging rules that will include graphic images placed on cigarette cartons are set to go in effect Saturday in Australia.

The packs will come in a drab shade of olive and feature dire health warnings and graphic photographs of the potential harmful effects of smoking.

The government, which has urged other countries to adopt similar rules, estimates the change will drop smoking rates in the country from 15 to 10 percent within six years.

Australia's Health Minister, Tanya Pilbersek, says the government is trying to make cigarette smoking as unglamorous as possible.

Smokers account for 17 percent of Australia's population. A pack of cigarettes retails in Australia for about $17 in the U.S.
