A livery cab driver was shot in his back in the Bronx early Sunday morning.

Police say 33-year-old Manuel Villegas was shot around 3:00 a.m. on Cypress Ave. He was taken to Lincoln Hospital where he had surgery and is in serious but stable condition.

The NYS Federation of Taxis said the suspect never entered the vehicle so the camera in the cab was never activated.

"What we're hoping is that people in the community had cameras and were able to get images of the people who committed this crime," said Fernando Mateo spokesman for the Taxi Federation.

Anyone with information regarding this incident is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-577-TIPS (8477).
