Jury selection has been delayed in the federal tax-evasion trial of an influential Cook County commissioner.
Victor Henderson, an attorney for William Beavers, was ill Monday. The trial is slated to begin Tuesday.
William Beavers is accused of diverting $226,000 from campaign coffers for personal use without reporting it as income on his returns. Prosecutors say the 77-year-old Democrat spent much of the money on casino gambling.
Beavers has denied the charges.
One of Beavers' defense attorneys, Sam Adam Jr., said his client is anxious to tell his side of the story.
"I'm telling you this man wants to get up there, should get up there and tell what exactly happened. At the end of that, you will see not only should he be acquitted, but will," Adam said.
Potential jurors will fill out questionnaires and then face one-by-one questioning in court by the presiding judge, James Zagel.
Among the questions on the questionnaires is whether would-be jurors were ever audited by the IRS. Another question asks if they have strong feelings about gambling.
Once they're impaneled, attorneys would deliver their opening statements. The trial is expected to last about two weeks.
