WAUKEGAN, Ill. (Sun-Times Media Wire) -
A 35-year-old man convicted of a drug charge got himself in even worse trouble when he attacked a sheriff's deputy in an attempt to escape from a north suburban courtroom on Thursday.
Keevan Fullwiley of Zion now faces three counts of aggravated battery to a police officer, a felony count of failure to return from a furlough, and a misdemeanor count of threatening a public official, according to the Lake County Sheriff's office.
About 4:15 p.m. on Thursday, Fullwiley was found guilty by a jury of possession with intent to deliver a controlled substance, and possession with intent to deliver cannabis, a release from the sheriff's office said.
Following the verdict, read in Courtroom C220 at the Lake County Courthouse in Waukegan, Judge Christopher Stride ordered Fullwiley taken into custody by the sheriff's office.
But Fullwiley jumped up from his chair and attacked a deputy in an attempt to flee the courtroom, according to police. The deputy was struck in the face by Fullwiley's fist and elbow. Other deputies took Fullwiley to the ground, but he continued to fight until a deputy used a Taser to subdue him.
The deputy suffered a serious laceration to his right elbow along with shoulder, neck, and back pain, according to the release. He was taken to Vista East Hospital where he received two staples in his elbow and x-rays were taken.
Fullwiley, of the 2300 Block of 33rd Street in Zion, is scheduled to appear in court on the new charges on Dec. 19.
