SANFORD, Fla. (WOFL FOX 35 ORLANDO) -
An off-duty Sanford police officer was involved in a crash early Sunday morning and left the scene, according to an arrest report released by the police department on Monday.
Officer Stephan Santiago was stopped by the Sanford Police Department shortly after the crash. Once the driver was identified as an off-duty officer, the supervisor on duty requested the Seminole County Sheriff's office to respond and they summoned the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) to investigate the incident.
The FHP issued Officer Santiago a criminal citation for leaving the scene of an accident with more than fifty dollars damage and a citation for careless driving.
The Sanford Police Department will conduct an independent review of the incident from a policy and procedure violation perspective after Florida Highway Patrol's investigation is completed.
