A Long Island man is accused of shooting his girlfriend Monday night because of an argument over wether a fictional TV show could become reality.
The show in question is AMC's The Walking Dead, based on the comic book series of the same name, in which flesh-eating zombies roam a post-apocalyptic world.
Nassau County police say that Jared Gurman, 26, of Williston Park had been having a heated argument over the show.
Det. Lt. Ray Cote said, "He feels strongly that some military mishap could happen, causing some tragic consequence. She felt it was ridiculous."
Police say the argument got so heated that the unnamed victim decided that she didn't want to spend the night at his apartment.
"He didn't want to let it go and continued a text dialogue that got even more angry and bitter," Cote said.
The 26-year-old woman became concerned that he might be going "over the edge" and returned to his apartment even though he said he didn't want her there.
Police say he met her in the yard carrying a .22 caliber rifle.
At some point, the gun discharged and hit her in the back. Police say the woman suffered a pierced lung, a pierced diaphragm, and a shattered back.
Police say the victim pleaded with Gurman and he drove her to North Shore/Long Island Jewish Medical Center in New Hyde Park.
Police say the doctors had problems containing the bleeding and she was transferred to another hospital, where she is now listed in serious but stable condition.
Gurman was arrested at the hospital. He was being held without bail after being arraigned on attempted murder charges in Hempstead.
